From Las Vegas to AYF Tri-Regional Seminar

The AYF Tri-Regional Seminar: Most see it as an opportunity to attend a series of lectures and debates, to improve our understanding of current events in Armenia, and to learn the details of our organization’s history. This was exactly what my expectations were. Being from Las Vegas, the “Sosse Mayrig” AYF Chapter sits at a distance from the rest of the Western Region. Hearing of the AYF Tri-Regional Seminar, taking place at Camp Haiastan from June 3-8 in little Franklin, Mass., I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

And so the journey begins.... Well actually the journey began over 17 years ago in 1994 when a group of impassioned and visionary AYF members created the Youth Corps program to gather young diasporan Armenians to travel to villages in newly-liberated Artsakh to do modest, but meaningful rebuilding work hand-in-hand with our sisters and brothers there.

Artsakh Fighters Educate Youth at AYF Seminar

The 2011 AYF Educational Seminar took place the weekend of May 20th at AYF Camp. The theme was “Artsakh: Past, Present and Future.” Several lectures were presented by individuals who were involved in the Artsakh Liberation Movement and were there from the beginning of the Republic’s self determination efforts.

Ruben Hakhverdyan

On February 13, 2011 the AYF brought legendary singer and poet, Ruben Hakhverdyan, to downtown Los Angeles’ famous Orpheum Theatre for a one-night only performance. Nearly 2000 fans crowded into the halls of the Theatre for what was one of Ruben’s largest and most memorable performances. A few days after the concert, we had the chance to sit down with Ruben for an exclusive interview with Haytoug, covering everything from the concert to his music to his thoughts on culture and politics.

(Re)Defining Rebirth

Life is endless renewal. Where there is no renewal there will be spiritual paralysis and a slow death. The idea of rebirth is a familiar one to the Armenian people because it has represented endurance in the face of oppression, perseverance in the face of struggle, and survival in the face of oblivion.

Community Health Fair Provides Free Medical Screenings

St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church was the site of the ArmenianYouth Federation’s Community Health Fair this past Saturday. With over a dozenbooths offering a range of free medical services from vision exams to immunizations, the Health Fair provided crucial medical support for community members.

AYF Announces Nanor Krikorian Scholarship Recipients

Four Armenian-American college-bound and two current university students will receive a helping hand with tuition and books this year, as the Armenian Youth Federation – Western US announced last week the recipients of its annual “Nanor Krikorian” Memorial Scholarship.
