On Dec. 7 1988, Gyumri shook, killing 25,000 and burying the future of a generation in the rubble. Today, 22 years later, the proud people of this historic city stand strong. On this anniversary, we explore life and struggle in Gyumri and the enduring spirit of a people who find hope in tragedy with this exclusive preview of the Winter 2011 issue of the Haytoug.
This commemorative issue covers the gamut of issues dealing with the city of Gyumri, from its 19th century history, to its catastrophic earthquake and the challenges facing every day people as they try to live their lives. The issue also features a special spotlight on the 2010 Youth Corps mission in Gyumri, as well as a deep look into the cost of living in the earthquake recovery zone.
Among the myriad of other topics covered in this issue, is a look at Rwanda 16 years after genocide, an interview with Hai Tad activist Tatul Sonentz-Papazian, and personal interviews with a team of regular people who climbed Mount Ararat over the summer.
